Ain’t No Grave, by Mary Glickman. It is the story of Max Sassaport, a Jewish boy, and Ruby Johnson, an African American girl, in rural Georgia in 1906. They are best friends, despite the prejudices and social barriers of the time. When Ruby flees from a violent act, she becomes a child laborer in the National Pencil Factory in Atlanta. Max later moves to Atlanta for a job as a reporter and ends up covering a controversial murder case there. He and Ruby meet again, and their bond is still strong, but racial tensions are high due. Copies of this book will be available from the library on April 4, and we will discuss it after kiddush on April 26.
