New Lehrhaus Musical Traditions of Iraqi Jews
Thursday, April 18, 2024 • 10 Nisan 5784
7:00 PM - 8:30 PMOf the 500,000 or so Jews of Iraqi ancestry living today, only perhaps 3 Jews live in Iraq. Before 1948, though, there were some 130,000 Jews in Iraq, of which 90,000 lived in Baghdad, when they comprised as much as a quarter of the total population. The Iraqi Jewish community not only had a vibrant musical culture within itself, but played a disproportionate role in general Iraqi musical culture. John Erlich's program will discuss Iraqi Jews and their music, and he will play and sing examples to illustrate the discussion.
Fee: $12 Registration is required.
