Led by Rabbi Dr. Becky Joseph

For at least two millennia, rabbinic commentators have
shared their views on the skin color of Jews, as well as
Africans and Europeans of other faiths and none. Translated
into many languages, disseminated throughout the Jewish
world and sometimes beyond, these texts profoundly
influence our continuing racialization of physical
appearance, especially Blackness, in ways that uphold white
supremacy. In antiracist becoming, we must address this.
This class will excite a wide range of learners. Biblical and
rabbinic texts will be provided before each session and
studied in English with references to the original languages
where translations are used. Each session will conclude with
a counter-text by a contemporary Black interpreter.

Topics for each session will be:
1/25 – I am Black and Beautiful
2/4 – The Generations of Noah
2/15 – The Blackness of the Cushites
2/22 – On the Exodus
